Description
Fallowfield Mine, Acomb, Hexham, Northumberland, England
An exceptionally sharp witherite crystal sits isolated on matrix and is from the Fallowfield Mine in England. The termination of the witherite is well formed but lightly chipped. The matrix is composed of the rare carbonate alstonite, which are the tiny pointed crystals that nearly completely cover the matrix. There are also small formations of gunmetal gray galena. Many witherites from England are not gemmy, have been weathered, or have a barite coating. This piece has nice translucency that is rare for the locality.
