Description
Sivec Marble Quarries, Sivec Mountain (Kavadar), Prisad, Prilep, North Macedonia (Republic of Macedonia)
A fabulous hot pink ruby crystal demonstrates a distinct form and is old stock from the ancient and historic Republic of Macedonia (now called North Macedonia.) These rubies form in a pure white marble that was prized by the Romans. The size and color of this piece is remarkable for this locality which was nearly lost from history, and pieces are very difficult to obtain today. The underside is a complete floater, and has an (extremely rare for the quarry!) blue sapphire on it. The color contrast from hot pink ruby to blue sapphire is amazing and exquisite. This specimen is composed of many partial crystals, and one is well formed and offset by a vug. The piece has satin luster, nice translucency and many details. The blue sapphire on the bottom is partially terminated.
