Description
New Cornelia Mine, Ajo, Little Ajo Mountains, Ajo District, Pima County, Arizona, USA
A gorgeous piece from the famous and historic New Cornelia Mine in the Ajo District of Arizona. It shows isolated malachite crystals and gemmy blue azurite crystals on a matrix plate. The Malchite crystals are secondary, pseudo morphing after the original azurite crystals. The sharpness and detail of the malachite crystals remains even after the replacement. They are highlight with gemmy bright blue azurite crystals and a black coating (likely cuprite) which covers the matrix. The Ajo District was mined for copper from the late 1800s to about 1972 and only rarely did the location produce copper secondary minerals such as malachite and azurite.
