Description
Second Sovietsky Mine, Dal’negorsk, Kavelerovo Mining District, Primorskiy Kray, Russia
The great mineral enthusiast and teacher John Sinkankas once said that datolite formations were “glassy, faintly greenish, wedge-shaped crystals with odd-shaped faces seemingly placed at random”. This piece appears to be the exception which proves the rule. This is a pale blue and slightly frosted datolite crystal. It has very regular and beveled crystal faces which are surrounded by contrasting white calcite scalenohedrons. This is one of the prettiest pieces of datolite that I have seen and certainly a great example from Dalnegorsk.
